What causes cramps in children
All structural units of the head have pain receptors that cause pain when reacting with stimuli. Cephalgia is a medical term for pain in the head. Spasms are diagnosed in people of all ages: in infants, adolescents, adults, the elderly.
Cephalgia is of 2 types: primary and secondary. The primary type is diagnosed when the baby is concerned only with painful attacks without concomitant manifestations. This indicates the absence of the disease that caused the pain.
Secondary attacks indicate the presence of the disease. Spasms are accompanied by fever, malaise, weakness.
A curious fact! In medical practice, there are about 300 causes of headaches in children.
Headache in children can be triggered by overwork, the progression of the disease, mental disorders. The main causes of spasmolytic seizures in the head include:
- Syndrome of vegetative dystonia.
- Migraine, which is accompanied by diarrhea, blanching of the skin, weakness. There may be a fear of light, distortion of visual images. The attack lasts from 30 minutes to 5 hours.
- Emotional or physical strain.
- Diseases of the respiratory tract, eyeballs.
- Meningitis, encephalitis. Inflammation of the meninges is manifested by repeated vomiting, high body temperature.
- Diseases of infectious or viral nature.
- Intoxication of the body.
- Tumor neoplasms of the brain. Volumetric tumors provoke unbearable pain that cannot be eliminated with painkillers. There is a violation of light perception, organ dysfunction.
- Traumatic brain injuries can cause concussion and brain injury.
If the child complains of a headache, the frequency and nature of the attacks should be determined. If vomiting and unconsciousness are involved, an ambulance team should be called in immediately.
Not going through intense pain indicates an increase in intracranial pressure. Frequent attacks indicate helminthic invasion, abscess and brain cysts.
A common cause of spasms is inflammation of the frontal or maxillary sinus. At the same time, pain hurts in the morning and on stooping, when the purulent contents fill the sinuses. Pain develops with inflammation of the middle ear, herpes infection, neuralgic disorders of the trigeminal nerve fiber.
Features of manifestation
If the child often complains of headaches, parents should determine the nature of the spasms and identify the presence of pathological symptoms: discoloration of the skin, lethargy, dizziness, nausea. Such signs indicate the progression of serious diseases.

Children of different ages react to painful manifestations in a special way. Children of five, six and seven years with painful manifestations often twitch their ears, hair, squeeze their heads with both hands. A 10-year-old child can consciously describe a condition. The nature of the attack is more difficult to assess in children 4 years old, they usually do not want to make contact, cry loudly.
Headache in children is stabbing, oppressive, aching, throbbing. Spasm can be localized in the forehead, temples, neck.
Migraine – the most common phenomenon among children aged 7 to 9 years. Such spasms are manifested by intense pulsation on the one hand, vomiting, irritability. Usually the attack subsides after a gag reflex.
Note! Separately allocate adolescent migraine, which disappears at the time of majority. The cause of the disorder is a change in hormonal levels.
A 10-year-old child has less intense pain than a 6-8-year-old child. This is explained by the fact that as they mature, the vessels become more stable.
Increased intracranial pressure
Cerebral hypertension is often diagnosed in infants. A sudden change in vascular pressure activates pain receptors. There is an accumulation of interstitial fluid, which puts pressure on the vessels, causing unbearable spasms. Against the background of a similar condition, a convulsive syndrome is formed.
Note! Swollen veins on the head and protrusion of the fontanel indicate pathology.
To diagnose vascular hypertension, a neurologist examines a newborn and, if necessary, sends it to an ultrasound scan procedure. The openness of the fontanel in infants allows for a detailed examination of the brain and a correct diagnosis.
Increased intracranial pressure provokes constant headaches in the baby. The violation is manifested by constant crying, intermittent sleep, anxiety. Usually, when a child reaches 5 years, the violation is eliminated by itself.
Central nervous system damage
Clinical manifestations are expressed in visual disturbances, lowering the threshold of susceptibility, epileptic seizures, and vomiting. Hematomas and cysts result in a similar condition. For proper diagnosis requires magnetic resonance imaging.
Viral and infectious diseases
Toxic compounds, which are formed as a result of the vital activity of pathogens, poison the baby’s body. Intoxication is accompanied by nausea, weakness, drowsiness.
The body temperature rises, chills and muscle soreness appear. Therefore, if a child has a headache, initially suspicion falls on a cold. The pediatrician will establish the correct diagnosis.
One of the dominant signs of the presence of tumors in the brain – unrestrained vomiting, cephalalgia. A bright manifestation of symptoms is usually observed in the morning. The spasm is characterized by a crushing, arching effect.
Doctors do not always resort to surgery. It is necessary to monitor the dynamics of cerebral inclusion. The operation is required with an increase in education, which leads to an increase in painful symptoms.
The frequency of detection of such attacks increases among children from 8 to 10 years. Causes of spasms include twisted posture, neck muscles overstrain, prolonged sitting at the computer. The child complains of pain in the parietal or frontal area. Pressing spasms pass after relaxation and rest.
The syndrome is associated with a change in vascular tone. This results in oxygen starvation of the brain, manifested in frequent yawning. Other causes include liver, heart and kidney diseases.
Dr. Komarovsky argues that dystonia develops in children who are under constant influence of the stress factor. Scandals, unhealthy atmosphere in the family exacerbate the situation. Because of this, the child constantly has a headache. Vegetative dystonia is treated by eliminating negative conditions and fighting the underlying disease.
ENT pathology, eye diseases
Any disease of the throat, ears, nasal passages is accompanied by a headache. Children suffer from frontal sinusitis, sinusitis, otitis media. Intoxication of the meninges provokes vascular dysfunction and painful attacks.
Prolonged tension of the eyeballs caused by reading, watching TV, often causes discomfort in children 6-7 years old. At this age, the child’s optic nerve is not able to withstand the increased load. The phenomenon is accompanied by rezyu, tearing. Parents should teach the kid to relax the eyeballs using eye gymnastic exercises.
Pain of meningeal etiology
Inflammatory processes in the membranes of the brain manifest unbearable spasms in the head. Complaints of the child are reduced to increased susceptibility of the skin, the inability to tilt his head to the chest.
This is due to stiff neck – the main symptom for which the diagnosis is made. Treatment of the disease is made in a medical institution.
Inflammation of the trigeminal nerve
A painful condition appears due to a herpes infection, an injury of hypothermia. The spasm is piercing, resembling a toothache. A characteristic sign of inflammation of the nerve is tearing from one eye. If you identify these symptoms should consult a neurologist.
Not only the appearance of persistent pains in the head, but also the functioning of the whole organism depends on an incorrectly formulated children’s diet. Lack of vitamins and nutrients disrupts blood circulation, causing spasms.
If a woman eats the wrong diet during pregnancy, it threatens to develop an unhealthy state in babies. Lack of food intake, ingestion of prohibited substances exacerbate the situation.
To relieve spasms caused by poor nutrition, you need to adjust the diet, enriching it with lactic acid products, white meat, seafood, fresh vegetables. It is necessary to refuse fat, salty, canned food, sausages, pastries. Such food reduces the immune system, leading to the development of various diseases.
Persistent crying can indicate head cramps that result from improper formation of brain vessels. This can be caused by hypoxia during fetal development, trauma during delivery.
As they grow up, these children often experience a delay in their psychophysical development, a dysfunction of many internal organs.
Constant headache in children requires the attention of specialists. With the help of differential diagnostics, the cause of the unhealthy condition is established.
Doctors prescribe the passage of radiography of the neck, angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, duplex examination of blood vessels. Liquor sampling through spinal puncture is performed to confirm meningitis.
How to help baby
To eliminate recurring headaches, you need to determine the cause of the spasms. Attacks can occur as a result of normal overvoltage, and a dangerous disease. The task of parents is to consult a doctor. The specialist will prescribe the appropriate treatment after identifying the factor that caused the disorder.
It is required to immediately call the ambulance team if the parents notice that the child has:
- head sore;
- spasms are shooting, accompanied by tinnitus;
- increases pain when you change the position of the body;
- seizure manifested by confusion.
If pain progresses after an injury, you need to consult a doctor.
Therapy of seizures in a child means providing the baby with complete rest. It is recommended to put the patient in the ventilated room. You can put a wet towel on your forehead. Massage effectively eliminates sore neck.
The baby should drink plenty of fluids to make up for the level of fluid lost after vomiting. Broths of valerian, motherwort with the addition of natural honey will relax the little patient and help you sleep.
Tip! It is recommended to give the child 2 tablets of ascorbic acid. They will eliminate cephalgia.
As a first aid, Paracetamol or Ibuprofen can be given crumbs, taking the dosage specified in the instructions. When simultaneous spasms in the head and abdomen will help cleansing enema. Manipulation is useful for intoxication, prolonged constipation.
If the spasms are systematic and accompanied by blanching of the skin, loss of consciousness – urgently call an ambulance.
The pain of tension is most easily treated. It is necessary to provide the baby with balanced nutrition, proper rest, and a calm atmosphere in the family. Herbal tea from chamomile, mint, lemon balm has a sedative activity. It will relax the baby.
If the cause of the disease state is an infectious disease, then antibacterial drugs are used for therapy. If neoplasms are detected, consultation with a neurosurgeon is necessary.
To reduce the intensity of pain and prevent relapse, you must follow simple rules:
- To organize an organized day regimen for children.
- Watch baby nutrition. Saturate the diet with microelements, fiber, vitamins.
- Regularly walk in the fresh air in any weather.
- Protect the crumbs from emotional shocks, stress, overexertion.
- To air the children’s room, to do wet cleaning, to maintain the required level of humidity.
- Create a warm comfortable atmosphere in the family.
- Organize your child’s sports life, write to the section, bring to the pool.
- Limit the time spent at the computer.
- Actively participate in the life of the child, communicate with his friends.
If the baby often complains of pain in the head, you should contact your neurologist. Children of seven years old are especially susceptible to spasms, as they go to school, which changes their psycho-emotional state. First-graders must pass a routine inspection and be observed by specialists. High intellectual loads are adjusted by the doctor.
