What is Evista?
Evista is used for osteoporosis prevention and treatment in women in the Menopause. The active ingredient raloxifene belongs to the group of selective Estrogen Receptor modulators (SERM). This drug mimics some of the effects of Estrogens, is itself not a hormone. Evista slows bone loss and strengthens bone. This drug is prescription-only.
What is the drug used?
Bone loss, also osteoporosis called, is one of the most common complaints of women during and after menopause. Due to the declining levels of Estrogen in the body, the bones become more brittle. It is faster to bone fractures; also, the back can SAG together vertebrae. Evista ensures that the bones absorb more calcium to make them stronger and more robust. As a result, the risk of bone fractures or a collapse of the vertebrae. Please note that Evista does not help against other menopausal symptoms, like hot flashes or night sweats.
How do you use Evista?
Evista tablets are supplied as a calendar pack on the blister strip. Take the tablet at the same time, and swallowed whole with a little water (with or without food). If you forget to take, you can do it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. You must never take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Make sure that during treatment with Evista, on a sufficient intake of calcium (dairy products) and Vitamin D (Margarine and meat; also sun light helps). If necessary, the doctor may prescribe you a calcium and/or vitamin Supplement. On the leaflet you will find more information about the use of this drug.
If the doctor is not otherwise prescribed, the usual dosage of Evista:
- adult women: once a day, 1 tablet of 60 mg.
Stick to the prescribed dosage and read the package insert.
Evista may cause side-effects. These include:
- Hot flashes (especially in the first half of the year);
- flu-like symptoms;
- Abdominal pain, Nausea, vomiting, or other gastro-intestinal complaints;
- Leg cramps;
- swollen hands, feet and/or ankles due to water retention. [/il]

When you must not use this medicine?
Evista is not suitable for everyone. Do not use this medication if you:
- allergic are to raloxifene or to any of the excipients used;
- still pregnant;
- a thrombosis, liver disease or renal impairment, suffering, or have suffered;
- Uterine cancer;
- in unexplained vaginal bleeding suffer.
Consult with the doctor about the use of Evista, if you suffer from any other disease. In the case of Evista interaction with other drugs occurs. Specify in your order what drugs, or dietary supplements you use. The doctor to know if these can safely be used with Evista combined.
This drug was developed for women after Menopause. If you do not belong to this age group, it is advisable to Use Evista during pregnancy or lactation. You can participate as usual on the road. Interactions with alcohol are not known.
