Why the head in the field of temples hurts: reasons and methods of treatment

Pain in temples

The temporal region is defined as the part of the head that is located between the frontal zone and the ear. The skin here is thin, under it lurk two ear and temporal muscles, ear, temporal vein and artery, lymphatic vessels, carotid artery. She is rich in nerves. Here the auricular and zygomaticis passes, the branches and the node of the trigeminal, the processes of the glossopharyngeal and wandering. From the inside to the bone tissue approaches the temporal region of the brain.

Headache in the temples occurs due to the fact that during , damage, receptors that are in the subcutaneous and muscle tissue, blood vessels, periosteum, , sinuses, irritate. There are no nerve endings in the bones.

The reasons

There are many reasons why there is pain in the temples. They can be external and internal. For external reasons include, eliminating which, the person returns to normal. They are not connected with organic lesions, and if they lead to them, it is only after prolonged exposure.

Why the head in the field of temples hurts: reasons and methods of treatment

  1. Intoxication. The pain is caused by poisoning with toxic substances contained in toys, finishing materials, products. A strong odor causes pressing pains in the temple, they spread to the forehead and the back of the head, intensified due to irritation of the eyes, laryngeal tissues, and nose. Long stay near the source of toxic substances leads to constant pain, feeling of swelling in the head, disorder of the respiratory organs, heart.
  2. Changing environmental conditions. During a trip to places with a different climate, in the high mountains, temporal pains appear during long flights, which disappear shortly after returning home. Often they are observed in people prone to vegetative-vascular dystonia or vascular pathologies.
  3. Starvation. Provokes soreness of the temporal region, weakness, the rejection of certain products or the whole of food.
  4. Overwork. Pressure in the temples appears as a result of excessive fatigue, severe mental exertion, sleep disturbances. In addition to the temple pain often captures the eye area. Fatigue is indicated by swelling, under eye circles, absent-mindedness, nervousness.
  5. Food. Chips, spices, chocolate, smoked meats, products with a high content of monosodium glutamate provoke the development of painful sensations. At the same time, a facial muscle spasm may occur.

The list of internal causes is more impressive. Mostly these are diseases associated with the brain.

The disease is neurological in nature, is considered primary. It arises independently, and not against the background of any disease. Some researchers, however, associate it with the defeat of the trigeminal nerve. Soreness appears on the one hand, describe it as pulsating.

It is so strong that a person loses working capacity, becomes very irritable, sluggish, depressed. He does not tolerate loud sounds, bright light, prefers to be in a dark room. There may be intolerance to certain odors.

Soreness increases with movement, fatigue, , eating disorders, sleep. Often accompanied by nausea. The attack lasts a few days.

Cluster pain

If migraine appears more often in women, then cluster pain is in men. There are no anatomical and physiological prerequisites for it. Sometimes it is attributed to the violation of biorhythms, smoking and overweight. The name comes from the nature of the pain – it appears in series.

The number of short-term attacks can reach three per day. And they can occur several months in a row. After which a long break is possible. The duration of one attack from 15 to 60 minutes.

The pain is very strong, sometimes it is difficult to endure. The onset of an attack is attributed to the fact that it lays the ear on one side, for example, on the left. Following immediately there is a sharp pain in the temple and behind the eye. Perhaps its spread to the forehead. Bursting blood vessels cause scleral redness. Tears appear. If there is pain in the left temple, the nose swells on this side, breathing becomes difficult. Blood rushes to your face, sweating increases.

The attacks are more often repeated in the fall and spring. Severe pain can cause suicide attempts.

Pain stress

Soreness in the temples leads to prolonged tension of the muscular tissue of the neck and head, caused by a uniform posture. Another reason is stress. Pressing pains appear from two sides. The attack lasts sometimes six hours.

With muscle tension every day, pain becomes chronic.

With repeated increases in to 140/90 and above, arterial hypertension is diagnosed. There is a narrowing of blood vessels under the influence of adrenaline, due to blood clots, atherosclerotic plaques. Squeeze them can neoplasms, hematomas. Increased pain in the temples provoke strong emotions, climate change, stuffiness, noise, fatigue. At the same time, there are painful sensations in the back of the head, noise in the head, sleep disorders, and front sight. Pain is characterized as if something is pressing on both sides of the temples.

Often the disease develops on its own and arises due to dysregulation of vascular tone. In some cases, it appears as a result of kidney disease, endocrine system, trauma. The pressure rises against the background of menopause, pregnancy, excess weight, physical inactivity.

Intracranial hypertension

Increased pressure in the cranial cavity is usually associated with the formation of an excessive amount of CSF, impaired circulation, accumulation in certain areas. Neoplasms, hemorrhages, hematomas, inflammatory processes, edemas lead to this state.

Pressing pain is accompanied by disorders of consciousness, vision, temporary blindness, paresis. Sometimes there are convulsions, breathing is disturbed, the person becomes sick. Soreness increases after a long time in a horizontal position. Distribute to other parts of the head.

Pathology is associated with the appearance of fatty plaques on the inner side of the vessels. Over time, they lead to a narrowing of the affected vessels, interfering with the free flow of blood, reducing the power of the brain.

Intellect, memory, attention, mental changes are observed. Because of the spasm, the limbs become cold, the skin becomes pale.

Traumatic brain injury

Damage to the temporal bone, concussion of the brain leads to pain, edema of internal tissues, nausea, pathologies of vision, hearing. Accompanied by dizziness, in severe cases – amnesia, loss of consciousness, convulsions. It is mainly one-sided. If the right side is affected, there is pain in the right temple.

The intensity and duration of pain depends on the severity of the lesion. Sometimes tremors are delayed in nature, they can appear in a few months.

Temporal arteritis

In this disease, inflammation of the artery occurs, which is located in the temporal region. Most often observed in older people. The pain is very intense, penetrating, has the nature of the pulsation. Increases when a person speaks, chews, touches his temple, sleeps. The main reason is called heredity and infection.

Complements the discomfort appetite, hyperthermia, joint pain, depression, increased sweating.

Angina pectoris

Pain in the temple on the left is a sign of angina. It increases with tension. The main symptoms are chest discomfort.

Feels like compression. Soreness gives to the jaw, shoulder blades. Heartburn occurs.

Infectious diseases

As a result of the ingestion of bacteria or viruses, it is intoxicated by the products of the vital activity of microorganisms. In some cases, pain in the head arises due to the spread of blood toxins. So, for example, occurs with influenza or ARVI. In other situations, microorganisms settle on the lining of the brain and cause inflammation. In the latter case, meningitis is diagnosed.

Pain, depending on the pathology, its severity is aching, pulsating. The processes occurring directly in the brain, are characterized by very strong pain sensations that lead to loss of consciousness.

Additional symptoms are nausea, muscular pain, fever, dizziness. Severe inflammatory processes, aggravated by additional pathologies, are accompanied by convulsions.

ENT diseases

When the form of sinusitis is neglected, pain in the forehead and in the temples is recorded. They are described as pulsing, intense, one-sided. When inflammation is on the left, there is pain in the left temple. Remove them with painkillers does not work.

Over time, they spread to the occipital region, face. Caused by the pressure of swollen, filled with pus cavities sinuses. Strengthened by bending. Accompanying the disease runny nose, weakness. The voice becomes nasal. The patient describes the sense of smell.

Temporal headache provokes otitis. Its symptoms are fever, discomfort when pressing on the ear, congestion, discharge of pus, impairment of hearing. When inflammation of the right ear hurts the right temple.

Squeezing, inflammation causes damage to the trigeminal nerve. The process is accompanied by severe pain, lumbago. Has the nature of acute attacks, which occur suddenly, last a few seconds and after a while repeat. Attacks occur several times a day, it happens that their number reaches one hundred.

Whiskey sore on one side only – if the affected nerve is on the right, the temple on the right side hurts. Transmitted into the eyes, cheeks. During the attack the patient can not do anything. In some cases, a squeezed nerve causes a spasm of the facial muscle.

Adrenal pheochromocytoma

The tumor is located inside the adrenal glands or on them. Enhances the release of adrenaline and norepinephrine – hormones that provoke vasoconstriction, increase blood pressure, accelerate the heart rhythm.

The result is a throbbing pain in the back of the head and temples. Accompanied by nausea, skin blanching, cramps of the calf muscles, panic fear. The duration of the episode of the attack – up to two hours, at the end of the symptoms disappear.

Temporomandibular joint disorder

Diseases of the joint, which regulates the work of the lower jaw, include injuries, degenerative disorders, improper installation of fillings, inflammation, and incorrect bite. In this case, the pain appears in the temples, the back of the head, gives to the ears, shoulder blades and shoulders, mainly on one side. Sore left temple of the head with the defeat of the joint on this side.

When you try to move the jaw there is a click. Patients often grind their teeth, clench their jaws. Its full discovery is limited. Edema and redness appear in the joint area.

Rarely headache in the temples comes alone. Usually it is supplemented by nausea, weakness, painful sensations in another part of the head, insomnia, tearing, increased salivation. Dizzy, there is a sound in the head, fingers grow numb.

Patients note disorders of memory and smell, cold legs and arms. Pain is often accompanied by allergies.

Determining the reasons why temporal pain occurs, is based on data from blood tests and instrumental examinations.

Indicators of the general analysis allow you to see signs of inflammation, , anemia. Biochemical data indicate signs of atherosclerosis, temporal arteritis, kidney disease, causing arterial hypertension. The coagulogram allows detecting the particularities of the blood clotting process, which allows to conclude that there is a risk of thrombosis and hemorrhage.

Instrumental diagnostic methods include:

  1. X-ray. Conducted mainly to eliminate inflammation in the sinuses, injuries, tumors.
  2. MRI The obtained data helps to see and evaluate the structure of the brain, tissue density, the presence of tumors, necrosis, hematomas, thrombosis, the state of the blood vessels. Can be carried out for small children and pregnant women. Babies held under anesthesia.
  3. CT scan. As a result of a layer-by-layer study, a flat or three-dimensional picture is obtained, which makes it possible to detect inflammation, tumors, and hemorrhages. The study helps to see tumors, vascular pattern, features of the bones of the skull, brain membrane, trauma, hematoma.
  4. Angiography. This is a special type of radiography with the introduction of a contrast agent that allows you to see the pattern of blood vessels, aneurysm, expansion.
  5. Head ultrasound. According to the results of the study, organic lesions are assessed, imbalances in shape, the size of blood vessels, and individual brain regions are identified.
  6. Electroencephalography. Indicates signs of epilepsy.
  7. Spinal puncture. A specialist takes a sample of liquor, analyzes it for changes in composition, evaluates intracranial pressure.
  8. Blood pressure monitoring. To clarify the diagnosis of arterial hypertension or hypotension, daily pressure monitoring using a special sensor is shown.

If an increase in intracranial pressure is suspected, consultation with an oculist is recommended. The simultaneous occurrence of pain in the joint and temple requires a visit to the dentist. Suspicion of arterial hypertension, adrenal pheochromocytoma – indication for visiting a nephrologist.

First aid

To ease the pain in the temples, it is recommended to lie down in peace and quiet, preferably in a room where bright sunlight does not penetrate. You can make yourself a massage in the temporal fossa. It is enough to press with your fingers on the right, if there is pain in the right temple for 10 seconds or perform light circular movements. The same movements are performed from the other side. Chamomile tea will help to calm down.

It is recommended to apply a cold compress to the temples and a hot compress in a few minutes.

Remove one-time headache by taking painkillers, for example, Nurofen, Aspirin, Paracetamol. However, with constant, increasing pain, treatment should be prescribed by a doctor based on the results of diagnosis.

Used drugs, physiotherapy, traditional methods, massage. For severe vascular pathologies, tumors, surgery is performed.

At home helps the use of aromatherapy. Lavender oil is rubbed into the temples, inhaled. It can be used for making baths.

Headache in the temples cause various diseases, it increases with fatigue, mental stress. Delivers discomfort, disrupts the ability to work. Its single manifestations are removed with anesthetic drugs. If the pain is permanent, aggravated, accompanied by nausea, fainting, you should consult a doctor to determine the diagnosis and treatment.
